Search Engine Optimisation?14th May 2007

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, is the term used to describe the technique of preparing a website to improve its chances of being referenced and ranked on a search engine, such as www.google.com or www.ask.com, once a relevant search query has been submitted. Many factors may be considered when optimising a website, including page content and layout, relevancy of HTML meta tag information, keyword density, the submission process and the validity and accessibility of the site.

With more and more emphasis being placed on major search engines as invaluable sources of information, it has become increasingly important for a website to be well optimised and “search engine friendly”. In fact Glenovation make SEO an important factor in the website design process of any new website development project. As much as this is the case with many web development companies, you may find that longer running or less well designed websites will not include many of the SEO factors that are currently considered to be important by some of the major search engines. However all is not lost, there are a number of simple techniques that can be used to help websites that are failing to make any kind of mark when relevant queries have been submitted:

1) Addition of HTML meta data
Addition of special HTML tags containing information such as keywords and page descriptions

2) Keyword Relevancy/Density Revision
Revision of content and keyword phrases to ensure that all keyword phrases are present within the page content

3) Page Title Relevancy Revision
Revision of page titles to ensure that the page title is relevant to the page content

4) Addition of a Site Map
The creation and addition of a page that links to every page of the website

5) Directory Submission
Submission to various web directories, business directories, etc

6) Relevant Link Building
Building up a collection of links to other relevant websites and having them place a reciprocal link back to your site

7) Google AdWords Campaign
A focused Google AdWords Campaign based on specific query strings . . .more

If you are interested in what a search engine bot sees when it arrives at your website, take a look at the SEO Text Browser at Domain Tools.

Is Your Website in Breach of The Companies Act?11th Apr 2007

As a result of an update to the Companies Act 1985 Legislation, every company must list its company registration number, place of registration and registered office address on its website. The information, which must be in legible characters, should also appear on order forms and in emails. Such information is already required on 'business letters' but the duty is being extended to websites, order forms and electronic documents.

The Companies Act 2006 Legislation has come into force in January 2007, requiring all companies in the UK to include this regulatory information on their website and in e-mail correspondence to avoid being in breach of the Act. If your website is still in breach of the act, please contact us to discuss updating your site with the required information.
